SharePoint Online: How to remove URLs from Search Results (I)!

In this post I will explain how you can temporarily configure SharePoint Online Search to remove some URLs from search results when users do a common search. As you will see, this configurations are really “temporal” and useless from a practical point of view:

  • Let’s assume we have a SharePoint online site named “C. Decisional” and we would like to avoid the home page of this site appears in the search result when doing a search in the search center.
  • In order to achieve this requirement, we only need to access to the SharePoint Online Administration and click the “Search” link in the vertical menu.

  • In the “Remove Search Results” page we only need to add the URLS we want to remove from the search results so SharePoint Online will remove them automatically from the results as soon as we press the “Remove Now” button.
  • Once the removal process finishes, we will see an information page in the “Remove Search Results” page saying that the URLs has been removed from the search results.
  • If we repeat the same search we did at the beginning, we will see that the URLs are effectively excluded from the search results.

And here is when it comes the question: How do we make these URLs appears again in the search results? Well, the answer is quite straightforward: as soon as a new crawl is done in SharePoint Online as you can read in the following Office 365 article: Therefore, this “Remove Search Results” setting is at the end quite useless as I said at the beginning of the post.
