Office 365: FAQs about Office 365 Groups functionality!

One of the most powerful Yammer features is the possibility to host great learning experiences through the YamJam groups. A YamJam group is just another Yammer Group that is created to talk about specific topics in some specific dates so group members can participate in real time doing questions and getting answers from other group members. One of the last YamJams I have participated in is the Groups YamJam that was created to answer questions, solve doubts and get feedback about the new Office 365 Groups features recently launched by Microsoft. In this article I’m reflecting a selection of some of the questions asked by the YamJam participands:

  • Q: What Office 365 plans will have the Groups feature? Any Office 365 plan is eligible to get this feature as Microsoft announced when Groups feature was officially launched: http://blogs.office.com/2014/09/25/delivering-first-chapter-groups-office-365/
  • Q: How many groups can be created in an Office 365 tenant? Although there is no official documentation reflecting this information, the answer provided by the team is the following:
    • Each Office 365 user can create a maximum of 250 group.
    • Each Office 365 user can be a member up to 1024 groups.
    • Each group can have an unlimited member’s number. However, only 300 members can be subscribed to a single group.
    • At the tenant level, there is not a specific limit regarding to the number of groups that can be created.
  • Q: Is it expected to have external users participating in Groups? Of course, it is a planned feature that will be added to Groups. For the moment, only current tenant users can participate in Office 365 Groups.
  • Q: Is it possible to disable Groups creation? Yes it is. You have to use PowerShell to disable it: Set-OwaMailboxPolicy -Identity test.com\OwaMailboxPolicy-Default -GroupCreationEnabled $false
  • Q: Is it planned to have a specific API and PowerShell cmdlets to work with Groups? Yes, It is. The team will release specific cmdlets to manage Groups and an API Groups is expected at some time in the future.
  • Q: What about reporting features for Groups? We will be releasing reporting features in the future too.
  • Q: What are the storage limits applicable to Groups in terms of the files that can be stored at the Group level? Storage limits are the same we currently have for SharePoint Online: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/office365-sharepoint-online-enterprise-help/sharepoint-online-software-boundaries-and-limits-HA102694293.aspx

I hope these FAQs can help you in understanding some of the key points when talking about Office 365 Groups.
